SARASOTA, FL – State troopers investigating the crash that killed four men on Interstate 75 in Sarasota Thursday night said the incident was caused by a distracted driver, according to Fox 13 News.

The four were among a group of seven men in a pickup truck that pulled over to the median after getting a flat tire on I-75 south near the exit for Bee Ridge Road shortly before 10 p.m. When they got out to change the tire, four of the men were fatally struck by a car driven by a 34-year-old Lakeland woman.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the accident happened after the driver took her eyes off the road for a moment and swerved to the left. The FHP added that the men had placed orange cones on the highway as a warning to drivers traveling through the area.

The driver was said to be cooperating with investigators and so far there have been no charges in the case.

State troopers said the incident served as another reminder to motorists to put down their cell phones while driving and keep both hands on the steering wheel.
